This is certainly a necessary tool in the high stress of the world we live in, so many people are fortunately finding the time to take care of themselves and balance their core. It is therefore an extremely rewarding and beneficial career choice, and if helping people while working on your own well-being sounds right to you, enrol in yoga teacher training today.
What You Need To Know
A yoga teacher needs to understand how the body works to help your students since you will educate them on different breathing exercises, yoga techniques, meditation and flexibility. Registered yoga schools will divide your training into 5 separate areas: yoga philosophy, anatomy and physiology, ethics, techniques, teaching methodoloy, and of course in addition to that, you will do your practicum.
Specific courses in these areas will include learning about asanas, kriyas, chanting, meditation, teaching styles, both Western and Eastern views of physiology, or the physical body to chakras, and how to help students, observe and receive feedback.
It is not necessary to have yoga teacher certification, and in fact you can complete a course in 2 days, but that does not make you qualified. It is very easy to injure yourself if yoga is not done properly. The Yoga Alliance wants you to fulfill a minimum educational requirement of a 200-500 hour course. You must do this at a school that the Yoga Alliance recognizes in order to become a registered yoga teacher. In this program, you will spend the majority of the time in a classroom, teaching while supervised by a registered instructor. The program you complete is therefore referred to as RYS 200 or RYS 500, depending on if it is a 200 or 500 hour course from a registered yoga school. Advanced Studies When you have finished your RYS training, you are able to become an RYT or registered yoga teacher, and your level is the same as the hours you took in school. After that, you can continue studying to become an Experience registered yoga teacher level 200, which will require 2 years 1000 hours of teaching experience, or level 500 which takes 4 years and 2000 hours of teaching. Your teaching experience is only counted from the time you became and RYT 200 or 500, so your training time is not included.
You can even obtain yoga teacher training online or at home, with training kits and videos to follow. They will not be given from Yoga Alliance certified schools however, but you can refresh your theory skills on things like meditations, mantras and the human sensory system by following one of these courses.
It is clear then that teaching yoga is a serious undertaking, and you must be dedicated to the art to train thoroughly and teach it properly. As a RYT you can find work in any health establishment: gym, spa, country club, or teach private lessons. The business is booming, and for experienced, trained professionals, it can be very lucrative. At a community center you may earn only $5-10 per student per hour, but privately, that amount could surpass $50 per hour. If this sounds ideal to you, look into registered yoga teacher training and start your path to a healthier lifestyle and happier career.
