Prepare For A Career In Beauty At Spa School
If you've ever thought of how luxurious it would be to lounge around in a spa all day long every day, why not to to spa school and make a profession out of giving beauty treatments to others?
At spa school you can learn the fundamentals in spa sciences and arts, like cosmetology, esthetics and nail technology. With these skills, you could be spending your days in a relaxing environment easing away other people's stress and earning money for it. What a great life.
Becoming an Esthetician
One of the areas you can study in spa school is to become an esthetician. This job entails using different skin care products and treatments to enhance skin's natural beauty and help it to look younger, fresher and healthier. You will be skilled in techniques like facials, body wraps and microdermabrasion among other things. An esthetician will need to train for 300-750 hours before course completion.
Your spa training will also include nail technology studies, where you can then specialize as a nail technician or do incorporate it as only one of your jobs. You will learn to shape, file and polish nails, protect them against damage or chipping and learn to work with artificial nails.
The latter will require your training in working with tips, gels, and foams. You will also be trained in giving manicures and pedicures, since these are still the most popular spa requests. Nail technician studies are usually about 300-750 hour programs and you will need to be licensed by the state to practice.
Becoming a Cosmetologist
Spa college can also take you into the world of cosmetology, where you will be exposed to a variety of different specialties. You will learn techniques of a massage therapist; understanding different pressure points, reflexology and different types of massages, Swedish, deep tissue and sports massages.
You will work tired muscles and improve blood circulation. To practice in this field, you will need to take a state licensing exam after you complete your 500-1000 hour massage therapist class.
Finally your spa course can also give you options to take hair design and techniques, or learn to be a makeup artist. A general cosmetologist will do it all: hair, makeup and nails, but you can choose to take all courses or specialize in one. The beauty of spa college is that you have many options under one roof, so you can dabble in a myriad of subjects or focus your attention in a specialization.
Required Training and Licensing Exam
Most programs you take will lead to a certificate in that field, like nail technician or massage therapist, but what is important is to take your training and sit a licensing exam. The cosmetology or esthetician license is offered by the National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology which represents all 50 state boards in the USA.
A massage therpaist licensing exam is offered by the National certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. Your accredited certificate courses will adequately train you to sit these exams.
Of course, you also have the option of going into spa management by getting your associate's degree in spa management and leadership. It is a 2 year program where you can either learn the basics of cosmetology on top of business management, administration and accounting, or you can transfer up to 750 spa school credits if you are already trained.
Working at an institute like a gym, spa or salon is work that is very much in demand these days. The training is minimal and with the right spa school, you could be on your way to be licensed in no time. In this stressed society, no time is better than now to join the spa career track.
