If you've ever gone for a massage, you might have noticed special emphasis placed on the feet, or perhaps the face. Job Description

Usually people who are already trained massage therapists or have taken holistic studies go to reflexology school to enhance the training they already have. As a reflexologist, you will work with your clients to help heal their bodies from what they may be suffering.

You will do this with acupressure, or controlling their pressure points to induce things like weight loss, increase blood flow, remove toxins from the body and help to alleviate earaches, bronchitis, anemia, hiccups, deafness and even emphysema. Your pressure points are the center of your organ's well-being, and stimulating the right ones with the right amount of pressure could change your system completely.

What You Will Learn

In your reflexology courses and training, you will learn about the body's ten longitudinal areas, divided into 5 per side of yourbody. All your organs and muscles are represented in the 4 areas of ears, face, hands and feet, and by pressing one you can control the circulation to that area, and stimulate energy, nutrients and impulses from your nerves, thereby balancing the body where it needs to be. You will also learn how to apply the pressure properly and the right amount, using your thumbs or fingers and with or without the use of essential oils.

There are no bachelor's or master's degrees in reflexology, although you can take an associate's degree in occupational studies. This course will include classes in anatomy, physiology, Swedish technique, reflexology, and Asian bodywork and can be done in 20 months.

Most commonly though, you will take a certificate in massage therapy and then you require reflexology certification in order to practice it as a massage therapist or holistic healer or to simply specialize in reflexology. In a certificate program, you will study classes like Western theory, auriculotherapy, balance and pressure, emotional responses, pathology, acupressure, aromatherapy and toe reading.

Online Reflexology Courses

You can find a reflexology school that teaches online courses that are the same as attending class, so you can finish your studies on your own time and at your own pace. You can complete the program with videos and at home training, because although there are reflexology internships available to students to gain confidence, they are not mandatory.

Job Opportunities and Salary

Working in reflexology can take you to chiropractic clinics, working at clients' homes or running a private practice where you perform acupressure on your clients. The field is now in high demand with a lot of room for growth, and hourly wages could be between $40-$80. Comprehensive reflexology courses could train you in all the pressure points and give you the skills you need to perhaps become your own boss.
