Naturopathic Schools

Before we had modern health clinics and hospitals, people learned how to use nature to provide them with everything they needed to cure their ailments. Not only that, but we don't realize how powerful our bodies really are; being able to fight diseases on their own if given the right circumstances.

Naturopathic Schools

Naturopaths are not against conventional medicine and in fact they can work together with medical doctors, but we have to have an open mind when it comes to helping the body fight ailments. At naturopathic schools, you will learn how this is done and how you can use it to help others find overall well-being.

Job Description

As a naturopath, you will work with many different types of people, from those suffering from diseases to those who are highly stressed in their environment, to pregnant women wanting a more natural remedy for their ailments. You will focus on treating the cause of their ailments, not the consequences, and you will look at the body as a whole, not focus on the individual part in question.

You will consider the body, mind and soul when treating your clients and account for each part to slowly help them achieve well being. Most commonly you will find work in alternative medicine clinics or be self-employed, but more and more medical doctors are incorporating a naturopath on their staff.

Naturopathic Schools and Training

A naturopathic doctor goes through the same rigorous training as a medical doctor would, and in addition to your medical studies, you need to complete an additional 4 years of training in acupuncture, clinical nutrition, homeopathic and botanical medicine and psychological counselling, since a large role you will have is counselling clients on lifestyle, diet and exercise changes.

Program Curriculum

Since you are treating the whole body, you will need extensive knowledge of the human system. Your education will teach you about anatomy, physiology, chemistry, molecular biology, symptomology, pathophysiology, using herbs as medicines and an advanced understanding of nutrition. Your programs will also include medical sciences like epidemiology, neuroscience, biostatistics and pharmacognosy, as well as diagnosing and counselling patients and business ethics.

Licensing and Renewing

It is mandatory to be licensed in order to practice as a naturopathic doctor after you get at least a 4 year degree. You can get a naturopathic degree as a 4 year bachelor's or master's degree of naturopathy to be eligible for naturopathy certification. You need to make sure that naturopathic schools you graduate from is accredited by the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education. Both bachelor's and master's degree programs can be done online at distance learning institutes.

You will then need to complete the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations, and when you have your license, you will need to take 150 credits of continuing education classes every 3 years in order to renew it. Your continuing education can also be done at an online school.

Job Opportunities and Average Salary

Being a naturopathic doctor can be a very lucrative and rewarding career, with the average salary range at about $80,000 per year and going up to about $200,000. Your experience and level of education do make a difference, and if you are combining your naturopathic degree with a medical license, you stand to make much more. It is also a career choice that is in demand right now since more people are turning to natural ways of healing over chemical drugs and invasive surgeries.

If you feel that natural healing is your calling and you want to learn more about how the body works and how to balance your inner energy, naturopathic schools are your first step. With the right school leading to certification, you can make this passion a very financially stable and fulfilling life.
