The human body is a complex system of nerves, muscles, joints; all parts that when injured can greatly impair your mobility. A kinesiology degree may not be sufficient on its own for many positions, but when coupled with additional training, there are a world of opportunities for someone skilled in this science.

A kinesiologist will work predominantly at evaluating the way we move and its impact on our bodies and lives. You will be working with people who are especially at high risk to injury, either because they already suffer from chronic pain, they play a large amount of contact sports or those who simply come to you to maintain stronger bodies and have better health.

Kinesiologist Job Description

As a trained kinesiologist, you have many job possibilities, including positions like coaching, athletic therapy, dance or gym teacher, exercise consultant, teachers, researchers, occupational health consultant, working in a sports facility or pursuing additional training as a chiropractor, doctor, police officer or physiotherapist.

Minimum Requirement - Kinesiology Degree

A bachelor's degree is generally the minimum degree level you would attain if you wanted to work in the field of kinesiology, although you can get an associate of science degree in kinesiology in 2 years which will either prepare you for further education in athletic training or grant you access to entry level jobs.

Accredited Kinesiology Schools

There are many accredited schools that offer kinesiology degree and exercise science bachelor's degrees. In this 4 year course, you will take classes like anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, biophysics and biomechanics and learn about human movement, motor behaviour, coordination and development, neurophysiology and rehabilitation therapy.

If you want to pursue teaching in kinesiology, it is required that you get your master's of education in health and kinesiology. The course is about 36 hours and can be done in school or online. Some of the classes you will take include biometric methods, ethics, practicum in kinesiology and research methods among other things. To go even further and prepare for a future in research, you can get your kinesiology doctorate degree. Both kinesiology programs contain internships to gain practical experience.

Career Outlook

Because there are so many different jobs available to you in the world of kinesiology, the pay scale has a large range. At the low end, you could work as an athletic trainer, coach or gym teacher for an average salary of about $35,000. At the upper end, you could get a job as a sales rep or physiotherapist for $50,000 to $60,000 a year. Of course working as a trainer or health consultant on any professional sports team would increase the salary scale, and the years of experience you have also makes a great difference in your potential earnings.

A degree in kinesiology opens up a world of opportunities for you in a variety of different fields. Most will require additional training on top of your kinesiology degree, but it will be a strong foundation for the career that you choose.
