Job Description and Academic Requirements

Renewing Your License

If you are already a medical doctor, the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine can certify you in integrative holistic medicine. You will need to renew your certification every 7 years.

Holistic nursing is recognized as a specialty within the nursing field by the American Nurses Association. This is a practice of nursing that focuses on healing the whole body through both medical and alternative methods.

If you want to be certified in holistic nursing by the American Holistic Nurses' Certification Corporation, you need to have a bachelor's degree and an RN license before passing the certification exam.

If you want to be an advanced holistic nurse, board certified, you need an RN license, your master's degree and 1 year of experience as a holistic nurse. This license needs to be renewed every 5 years.

The Holistic Nutrition Credentialing Board certfied professional nutritionists who want to become holistic nutritionists and educate people on the health and importance of nutrition by using whole foods. To become certified, you need to attend a course that is recognized by the National Association of Nutrition Professionals (NANP), and have 500 hours of work experience before you can take the exam. If successful you will be Board Certified in Holistic Nutrition and must renew your license every 2 years.

Online Degree Programs

You can even get your holistic health degree online from accredited holistic health schools. These courses will take you through the same basics you would learn in class and can lead to an associate's, bachelor's, master's or doctorate degree.

After attending holistic medicine schools and getting either an associate's degree or certification, or going further to get your bachelor's or master's, there are many job opportunities available to you.

If you are already a medical doctor or registered nurse, you will take your holistic studies and add them to your current hospital, clinic or medical office environment. You could also work as a holistic nutritionist privately or at a spa, community center or country club. Adding these studies to your current career can bring endless possibilities.

Salary

The salary scale for someone working in holistic medicine ranges based on the type of job you have and the level of degree. If you have a doctorate of holistic nutrition, which means you've studied subjects like psychodietetics, longevity and immunity, your beginning salary would be around $35,000 while you could make up to $90,000. The average salary for a holistic nurse on the other hand is around $44,000.
