Back pain is serious and debilitating for many people. It can range from simple aches and throbbing that you can try to medicate over and work through, to serious enough that you are bed-ridden and suffering. A chiropractic career can change someone's life by giving them a day without pain, and at chiropractic schools, you can learn the skills and requirements you need to become a professional in the field.
A chiropractor works with patients who have problems with their musculoskeletal system. These problems can stretch further to affect the nervous system and ultimately jeopardize the patient's entire well-being. They believe that an imbalanced muscular or skeletal system creates a lower immunity to disease, so they work with patients by manipulating their spinal column to regain the normal nerve impulses through the body that may be interrupted by imbalance.
Job and Skills Needed On The Job
You will also work with different therapies like heat, water, light cold and other physical therapies, as well as using x-rays to establish the problem. There are however, no surgeries or drugs administered. For that, a chiropractor will have to refer the patient to another doctor.
You will need to attend chiropractic schools for at least 2 to 4 years before you can consider going to chiropractic colleges. To practice as a chiropractor, you need to be licensed once completing your 4 year doctorate at chiropractic school. No lower degree level will be accepted.
Some chiropractic colleges offer bachelor's programs, but they are simply to help you prepare to go further with your PHd. There are only 15 accredited doctorate chiropractic programs that the Council on Chiropractic Education has recognized, so you need to be sure to enrol in one of them only. Taking Continuing Education
When you are certified after passing the state board exams, you will need to take continuing education classes to maintain your license. Each state has different requirements for it. Online programs are not offered to become a licensed chiropractor, but you can take your continuing education classes online at a variety of accredited institutes.
You will have extensive training while doing your doctorate degree in a variety of sciences. Your education will include anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology and pathology. In clinical studies you will look at chiropractic history, principles and techniques, nutrition, therapeutic and rehabilitation and diagnosis. You will then do a mandatory internship at a health care center under the direct supervision of licensed chiropractors.
Career Choices and Salary
Most chiropractors work in private practices or for themselves, but you can also find jobs at clinics or chiropractic colleges. The demand for chiropractors is increasing as more people are starting to turn to alternative methods of healing, so the industry will continue to grow until at least 2014. On average, they will make about $69,000 a year, but since many are self-employed, they have to deduct insurance and pension from their salaries. Nonetheless, it is a lucrative job. You do need to get a high level of education, but with the right training at chiropractic schools, you can achieve great success in this career choice.
